One Day workshops with an 8x10 camera Ever wonder why some photographers still use those old-fashioned field cameras with the cloth pulled over their head? It's not just that they are hiding from the world. It's because they enjoy it. Pure, simple photography. You and the camera. A chance to take photographs, not just press a button. And, there's no computer screen to stare at. The quality from a 4x5 or 8x10 negative can't be beaten with a digital or miniature camera. If this sounds like something you might find interesting, then Large Format 101 is for you. This is a hands on beginner workshop for photographers who are already experienced with digital, 35 mm or medium-format cameras, and want to try the 8x10 field camera. Using my wood field 8x10, lenses and tripod, we will start at the beginning. Loading film, setting up the camera, selecting the right lens, learning the camera and taking pictures. At the end of the day, you'll leave with an appreciation of the big camera, the skills to start off on your own.
This day- long workshop will include discussions on the various cameras available, camera movements, depth of field, and the skills needed to work with a large format camera and film. The workshop includes hands-on personal instruction in how to use the camera, photographing the landscape and local architecture with the goal of becoming comfortable using the large format. All you need to bring to enjoy the day is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

"On 14th June 2008 I attended the BIG CAMERA workshop on LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY, never having used a large format camera before I was not sure exactly what I was getting myself in for. However Rob Skeoch, the instructor, immediately put me at ease and proved himself to be more than able, not only to put me at ease but instruct me in the noble art of 8x10 photography.
From start to finish Rob showed he was a master of the format and his relaxed teaching style was very easy to follow. I learned all the controls on how to operate the camera and even managed to expose a few sheets of film and then develop them. I am an experienced 35mm and 120 film photographer but found the workshop to be very informative.
The equipment and facilities used on this workshop are first class. From start to finish I found the whole experience enjoyable and very worthwhile, I would not hesitate to recommend this for anyone interested in learning more about large format.

Inspired by the large format work of Jack Dykinga and David Muench, I wanted to take my landscape photography to the next level of image quality, but I had no idea how to harness the power of the view camera.
Rob Skeoch's introductory large format workshop gave me all the information and tools I needed to start capturing the intricate details of nature, from the basics of loading sheet film and mounting a lens, to understanding the fundamental concepts of tilts and swings as a means of selecting the optimal focus plane for maximum depth of field.
The lenses and cameras supplied during the workshop greatly assisted my future purchasing decision for my own large format equipment. Rob's patience in teaching, coupled to his talent for distilling the essential elements of potentially difficult subject material, made this one of the best instructional workshops I have ever attended.
Highly recommended!
